Protect your fists. Professionally.
In this quick guide we’ll cover how to wrap your hands, both professionally with tape and also with the use of cotton strips.
The boxing strips are used in all types of combat sports when wearing gloves. Boxing, Thai boxing, Kickboxing or full contact MMA. For each of the disciplines the concept is the same, to protect the complete hand and wrist, not only the bones but to avoid excessive shock or over-extension to the muscles and tendons. Correct positioning of the bands is imperative; mastering the art of taping hands takes hours of practice.
In this video tutorial you will be able to see how to correctly position a 4 meter cotton band.
A cotton strip (or band) is inexpensive, reusable and much quicker to position perfectly. When considering this method, be sure to use a reputable brand of strips such as Venum or Hayabusa, using a high-quality cotton to help absorb sweat quickly and protect your fragile knuckles. The recommended length for a strip is 4 meters but various lengths are available.
Every time you are working out, striking bags, sparring or competing, if you’re throwing a fist it needs to be protected at all costs, without you are risking serious injury, usually dislocating a thumb or wrist. Please note – take care of your strips as they take care of you, wash them regularly and make sure they are not perished in any area.
In this second video tutorial produced by the coach Sittichai Sitsongpeenong , you can see a professional bandage a hand with tape.
Tapes are mainly used for combat. This is a process that takes up to 15 minutes if completed properly, with oil and good quality adhesive bandage. Special care is observed for sensitive areas such as the phalanges, no area is left out – the hand of the boxer is fully protected and ready to strike. Much more solidly protected than with the use of cotton strips.
A professionally taped hand is totally encompassed and can be considered a strait jacket for the hand. A single use protection which is cut after the fight.
We advise the use of a coach kit, a kit which contains everything needed to professionally tape a hand. Although a little pricey, a good investment for any serious boxers looking to make pro bandages.
Watched the tutorials? Still unsure? If you’re finding this a little complicated, we have a solution. Gel bands / mittens. The mittens give good protection to the phalanges and only take moment to slip on. You won’t have the total protection of other methods but these are great for training and light sparring.
We hope this has been insightful and you now know the importance of wrapping your fists!
