Machida vs Romero UFC Fightnight 70
In Hollywood, Florida this weekend, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida is set to take the stage in a 185 pound main card bout versus Yoel Romero. Machida, a UFC middleweight and light heavyweight veteran is coming off a defeat against Luke Rockhold in a UFC fightnight in mid-april. Machida fell to Rockhold’s second round dominant rear-naked choke submission.
Venum athlete Lyoto Machida is a true mixed martial artist, having spent nearly a decade in the UFC’s octagon, with a record of 22-6. His truly unique fighting style combining his vast Karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu knowledge has seen him take down and control even the most formidable of opponents.
Yoel Romero, the 38 year old Cuban is a highly regarded and decorated wrestler. A former world champion and Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling. Currently 9-1 in the UFC. Despite being on the card at UFC 184 to face Ronaldo Souza, Souza pulled out through illness – the bout being moved to UFC on Fox 15 (Lyoto Machida vs Luke Rockhold). The fight never happened as Romero withdrew through injury.
The last time we saw this Cuban powerhouse in the ring was against Tim Kennedy at UFC 178, Romero was nearly finished very late in the second round, visibly stunned when his corner team was in the octagon. Managing to compose himself and secure a TKO in round three, Lyoto Machida will have a tough fight on his hands and will need to draw on all his striking, grappling and overall octagon experience.
This is the second quickest turnaround for a fight Lyoto Machida has ever done in his MMA career, training with Team Venum and focussing on moving forward in the 185 pound division in the UFC.
